The type of battery you need for your RV depends on a few key factors:
1. Battery Purpose
- Starting Battery: For starting the engine/motor only. These are lead-acid batteries not designed for deep discharge.
- Deep Cycle Battery: For powering the RV's electrical loads like lights, appliances, etc. These can be discharged deeply many times.
2. Battery Chemistry
- Flooded Lead-Acid: Affordable but require maintenance and ventilation for gassing.
- Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM): More expensive than flooded, but maintenance-free and safer.
- Gel Cell: Also sealed and maintenance-free, but more sensitive to overcharging.
- Lithium-Ion: Newest technology, lightest weight, longest lifespan but most expensive.
3. Battery Size/Capacity
- This is rated in amp-hours (Ah) or reserve capacity (RC). More Ah = more power supply.
- Match the battery capacity to your RV's power needs and length of dry camping.
- Common sizes are Group 24, 27, 31 batteries.
For most RVs, the recommended batteries are:
- If motorhome: A starting battery for the engine, plus AGM or lithium deep cycle house batteries
- If towable: Two or more AGM or lithium deep cycle batteries wired in parallel as the house bank
